Document View
A Document View Template allows you to control exactly how document metadata is displayed within the Document View.
By utilizing this template, you ensure a consistent review experience and surface critical information at a glance, streamlining your document-by-document review process.
Users can manage the Document View Template from the Tenant and Project level:
- Tenant Level: Configured by Tenant Administrators under Tenant Settings. The user can create only one custom template per tenant, and it will be automatically copied over to the new project upon Project’s creation.
- Project Level: Configured by Project Administrators or Review Managers. The user can create only one custom template per project, and it applies specifically to that project.
Tenant Templates are only copied to projects created after the template is saved. Existing projects will not receive the Tenant Template. Once a tenant template is copied to a project, it becomes independent. Any edits or deletions at the Tenant level will not affect the project.
A Document View Template saves your interface preferences for the document view screen. It specifically manages two areas:
- Review Fields: Essential Metadata fields which may contain important PII elements and are displayed at the top of the document. PII detection and checkbox highlights apply to these fields. By default, search results include these fields.
- Pinned Fields: Specific metadata pinned to the top of the Left Sidebar for quick reference.

While the Left Sidebar displays all metadata collected by Canopy, the Review Fields (top of document) include the following:
- All Source Paths
- Author
- BCC
- CC
- File Name
- From
- To
- Source Path
- Subject
- Title
If you need specific metadata to appear as Review Fields or pinned to the top of the left panel, you can create a custom template at either the Tenant or Project level.
-
Navigate to Settings and select Templates (under the Project or Tenant settings).
-
In the Document View Templates section, click Manage document view templates.

-
Click Create New Template

-
Configure Fields:
- Toggle: Use the “On/Off” switches to add or remove metadata fields from the Review Fields or the Pinned Left Panel fields.
- Reorder: Drag and drop the metadata field to prioritize the display order.

-
Click Save.
-
Enter your template’s name in the pop-up modal, and click Save to create the new template.

- Tenant Templates: Only Tenant Administrators can create the tenant-level template.
- Project Templates: Project Administrators or Review Managers can create and apply the project-level template.
A Tenant can have only one custom template plus the “Canopy Default Template.”
A Project may display up to three templates: the Canopy Default Template, a Project-specific template, and the Template copied from the Tenant.
You can update existing custom templates at any time. Noted that the Project-level users cannot edit the template inherited from the Tenant.
-
Navigate to Settings and select Template (under the Project or Tenant settings).
-
Click Manage document view templates.
-
Select your custom template from the dropdown menu.
-
Click Edit.
